The collection contains correspondence from fellow historians, friends, publishers & students regarding current activities, research, publications, meetings & jobs. There are speeches, book reviews by and on Abernethy, clippings about him, research material and the ms. of his introduction to the Harper Torchback edition of Jefferson's "Notes on the state of Virginia." The papers also include letters between Abernethy and his wife Ida Erckman Abernethy as well as some articles and stories by her.
